Overview
The optical shift behind optical interconnects
Artificial intelligence is driving unprecedented demand for bandwidth between processors, memory, and networks.
As our dependence upon AI increases, the movement of data is becoming one of the greatest challenges in modern computing.
Vuzix is applying decades of precision waveguide innovation to help enable the next generation of AI optical connectivity.
MEETING DATA CENTER CHALLENGES
Waveguide Optical Interconnects Enabling AI Scale-up
Waveguides are extending beyond wearable displays to enable a new generation of optical interconnect technologies for AI infrastructure. By routing thousands of optical pathways through compact substrates, waveguide-based designs can increase optical density, improve energy efficiency, and support emerging CPO technologies for AI-scale computing.
Thousands of lanes vs. a few brutal ones
As AI systems continue to scale, bandwidth is increasingly achieved through parallelism rather than speed alone. Traditional SerDes architectures push a small number of electrical lanes toward their physical limits, while waveguide-based optical architectures enable thousands of parallel channels that dramatically increase aggregate bandwidth, scalability, and energy efficiency.
Instead of pushing a few data channels harder, parallel optics add thousands of easy ones.
Tens of channels
SerDes: a few power-hungry lanes at their physical limit.
Thousands of channels
Parallel optics: thousands of high density channels and lower power lanes overcoming the limitations of copper.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Vuzix waveguide-based technologies enable a new class of optical interconnects
Waveguide interconnects, utilizing uLEDs and VCSELs, provide a superior approach to routing large numbers of optical pathways within a single compact substrate. By increasing optical density while simplifying optical routing, they enable a new class of high density optical interconnects designed for AI scale computing.

EVALUATION Kit
Vuzix Causeway™ Waveguide evaluation kit
Vuzix supplies Causeway™ evaluation kits to qualified partners developing next-generation optical interconnects. Each kit lets engineers measure the parameters that decide feasibility: insertion loss and transmission, polarization-dependent loss, crosstalk, signal-to-noise ratio, and channel density.
Vuzix tailors the waveguide grating structures to your source wavelength, visible through near infrared, and to either uLED or VCSEL illumination.
