What is a waveguide?

A waveguide is a transparent optical component that directs and projects digital images into a user's field of view while allowing them to maintain a clear view of the surrounding environment. Using precision optical structures, waveguides efficiently guide light through transparent lenses to create lightweight, see-through displays. As a core enabling technology for AI smart glasses, heads-up displays, and other advanced optical systems, waveguides combine high image quality with a natural viewing experience.

What if none of the Core configurations fits my product?

Vuzix develops custom waveguide geometries for OEM partners with application-specific requirements outside the standard portfolio. Custom programs can specify field of view beyond 40°+, a range of display engines (DLP, LCoS, laser LCoS, microLED, OLED), monocular or binocular layouts, helmet-mounted or consumer form factors, prescription compatibility via Litebank, non-headworn (Jumbo format) applications, and material choices including glass, polymer, or ultra-thin glass via Micro-Touch. Initial custom samples typically ship 8–16 weeks from design confirmation.

How does Vuzix Incognito technology actually work?

Vuzix Incognito reduces forward-facing light leakage in waveguide displays without impacting power consumption. The result is improved image privacy for the wearer and reduced visible signature from the outside — particularly important for defense applications requiring low-signature operation and consumer products where users prefer that nearby people not see the displayed image. Incognito is available on core and most custom waveguide configurations.

Does Vuzix work with display engines my team is already using?

Most likely yes. Vuzix waveguides are compatible with multiple display engine technologies including DLP, LCoS, laser LCoS, microLED, and OLED. The four Vuzix Core configurations are paired with proven display engine choices — DLP at 1280 × 720 for the C-40 and CV-40, LCoS at 640 × 480 for the CI-30, and microLED for the MI-30 — but custom programs can specify alternative display engines to match existing OEM hardware and software stacks.
