In the world of performance wingsuiting where divers reach speeds well over 100 mph and are scored against an unforgiving set of measurements, precision is everything. Jason Dodunski, a professional wingsuit flier and software developer from Gold Coast Australia, is a visionary who’s pushing the boundaries of his sport with augmented reality. Boasting over 3,600 jumps and an unmatched dedication to innovation, Jason has become a pioneer not just in the sport, but in the way technology is reshaping it. His secret weapon? Vuzix Blade 2 smart glasses.
With an eye towards the performance standards that matter most, Jason has developed two custom wingsuit apps that run directly on the Blade 2. These apps provide real-time data feeds, including speed, altitude, glide ratios, and live weather conditions by calling into local weather stations mid-jump. This real-time data gives Jason the critical edge he needs while navigating unpredictable skies. "Every second counts when you’re moving at high speeds and can't always see where you're going," he explains. “The glasses give me a heads up dashboard.”
One of the key innovations is the use of gps to track his position in his “flight lane”—an invisible corredor only 600m wide that comprises the competition’s scoring boundaries and landing point. With the software giving him heads-up feedback on his position and a virtual line of sight, Jason avoids losing precious points for drifting out of his lane. It’s this kind of integration between human performance and wearable technology that’s setting him apart on the global stage.
Jason has used the Blade 2 as his in-air assistant for over 2,500 jumps, making him one of the most experienced tech-enabled wingsuit pilots in the world. His results speak for themselves: he recently finished 2nd at the Australian Nationals, and he’s now preparing for the 5th FAI World Cup of Wingsuit Flying in Prostejov, Czech Republic this August.
“I’m focused and ready to build on the momentum,” Jason says. “I’ve identified key areas for improvement and will be pushing hard to challenge for the top of the podium once again.”
As wingsuit flying continues to evolve, so too does the gear that supports its top athletes. In that area, Jason Dodunski isn’t just keeping up—he’s changing the game with AR.
